Ideally, the Universal Remote Control app should let you control your Smart TV right from your Google Android device. However, the overall experience that you get when using this tool is terrible the least.
Interface
The minimalist design of the Google Play app for Universal Remote Control warrants a rating of 6/10. The design isn’t too attractive, and you probably won’t get too thrilled using the app on your phone. Buttons offered include the Volume Up/Down, Programme, and Menu buttons, Mute and Power buttons and settings. The UI is free of any clutter.
Features
Aside from the design which is relatively okay, there is nothing good with this app. I rarely got to use the various remote options and when I did only the Volume up button worked. The Android app requires your phone to have an IR Port, an IR blaster or you can choose WiFi for newer smart TV models.
The connectivity on this app is dreadful, to put it mildly. All factors considered, I’ll give this section a rating of 2/10.
The app is apparently compatible with Samsung, LG, Vizio, Panasonic, Sharp, Sony and all other Smart TVs that support the IR functionality. Only the APK download is available (Android 2.2 or higher), and there is no iOS version.
The APK is download free, and there aren’t any in-app purchases. Updates also don’t work.
Performance
The app gets a rating of 2/10 in my books and is easily the worst Universal Remote Control app I’ve ever used. There are too many ads on this app which are intrusive. The controls are quite unresponsive, and even then I only got the volume buttons to work. This app actually tries to force you to give it a 5-star rating even before you start using it. After installing the latest version on my phone, my device slowed down significantly and I had to do a clean-up.
The Verdict
I would say that this app is the most awful Universal Remote control I`ve ever experienced. Even after trying to fix the app severally, it refused to work. I initially thought my device wasn’t compatible but after uninstalling and reinstalling it again, it still didn’t work. The developer seems to have put very little though in the back end development of the app and focused more on the UI. This is far from the leading remote control app, and I’ve used far better apps which are compatible with both iOS and Android.
I wouldn’t recommend this app to anyone.
