WinZip is a legendary application, a patriarch in the world of archiving software so to say. It has been around for almost 27 years, making its debut in 1991, when the personal computers were large, slow and consumed as much electricity as a fridge. And floppy disks were still a thing. Do you get that nostalgic, tear-jerking feel?

Anyway, WinZip Computing released the mobile application in 2012 and as for the beginning of 2018, it’s been downloaded more than 50 million times. Not bad.

If you’re dealing with an archiving app for the first time, I’ll explain what it’s for. Basically, it compresses a bunch of your files (in this situation format doesn’t matter) into one archive making their overall size smaller. This way it’s much more convenient to share files or keep their backup copies (just in case).  WinZip does the same on your smartphone/tablet.

Now the things I like about the application.

The number of supported formats is tremendous! What we have here:

  • Photos and images;
  • Excel spreadsheets;
  • Apk files – rejoice, programmers;
  • All types of media including video and music;
  • All the text files known – from.txt, to .sql;
  • PDF files;
  • Web files including .html and .jsp;
  • Word docs;
  • PowerPoint presentations – feature that I personally cherish;
  • Comic book files – it doubtlessly deserves some applause.

As you can see the abundance of the supported formats is stunning which is especially handy for collaborations.

You can send to your partners/colleagues a newly developed apk beta or poster layouts dedicated to International Polar Bear Day in a moment.

But what I really love, except for the myriad of supported file formats, is that WinZip was the first archiver to offer us the instant access to the Dropbox and Google Drive. The freshly created archive can be dispatched directly to one of these two services and consequently shared and safely stored.

And another intricate feature that I dealt with was Zipx format with its lossless audio compression which positively affects the MP3s files quality. Audiophiles might appreciate it.

And things I don’t enjoy much.

First of all, I was disheartened to know that more advanced encryption 256-bit AES algorithms are available after you insert a coin.

Second, the pop-up advertisements reminded me of a hungry mosquito swarm. Persistence with which they kept appearing on display was quite admirable. And a couple of times it ruined the archiving process.

And third, I didn’t quite catch why a program like WinZip might need a feature that allows you to scan your device for images of poor quality or very big size. While trying it, I accidentally deleted a couple of screenshots I needed. Although I should admit, that option can help you get rid of the duplicate images. 9/10.

It takes some time to learn all the ins and outs of this app mechanics. But the adaptation isn’t tricky at all. The interface is pretty intuitive, and it includes categories like “Music”, “Photos” etc. which helps you navigate through the data rapidly and find the stuff you need to archive momentarily.

By the way, the archiving process is speedy – it took me only 1 min 40 secs to have a 91 MB video zipped. 8/10.

The Verdict

WinZip confirms its legendary status by providing a high-quality product for mobile devices. But you’d better be ready to pay to get full access to its magnificent full functionality.
